Answer: Short answer: it depends and few people know. I asked that very question during my tour of the Celestial Seasoning facility in Boulder Colorado years ago. I was told that the approximate ratio is proprietary and it varies depending on the strength and blends of the Yerba Maté - all hail the blend master! Having made many cuia of Chimarrão in-and-from Brazil's Gaucho country, I understand the difficulty of standardizing the flavor between batches and seasons of the Yerba Maté...Morning Thunder has consistent flavor and brew color from bag-to-bag as well as box-to-box!

Answer: Yerba maté alone (as served in Brazil and Argentina) tastes like a blend of green tea and orange pekoe (black) tea. When you roast the yerba maté and blend it with black tea, the flavor begins to resemble a chai. If you've never tasted any of my descriptions, I have no other frame of reference for you. Answer: I have been drinking Morning Thunder tea since the mid 1970's. Back then, the package stated "gives you the power of a thousand charging buffalo", but new truth in advertising put a stop to that. This is my favorite morning tea. I have to start teaching esl to first graders at 5:00 am, so I need to be awake. It's not just the energy, but the flavor is full-bodied and earthy. We love Morning Thunder in our house and can go through a whole box quickly - the unique taste of the mate blend also packs a caffeine punch! For some reason, this tea is not easy to find at stores local to West LA. Instead of making special trips out to a specific Whole Foods in Santa Monica, I thought I'd look online. I was pleasantly surprised to find that it was actually MUCH cheaper online in a pack of 6 boxes that could be delivered straight to me. Buying in bulk online means I pay less than half the price I would for individual boxes at a regular grocery store. Another reason I love Amazon!

Years ago, when I suddenly couldn't get this in stores any longer, I was seriously upset by it. This has always been my favorite tea, as well as the only tea my father will drink, so finding it here was a thoroughly delightful surprise. This is absolutely my favorite tea. It's bold enough to replace my craving for coffee, and not so bitter that I want sweet it in. (Though I have used gobs of sourwood honey with it and was most pleased.) I used to be a die hard coffee drinker, but over past couple months I have been drinking more tea. In my opinion this tea gives you more kick than a cup of coffee, but without the dry mouth or heart fluttering sensation! Tastes very earthy, not sweet. Great way to start the day or kick up your day anytime. I don't steep more than 4 minutes or it starts to get too bitter.

The first time I tried this tea, I was on the fence about it. It has a taste unlike any other I've tried. I couldn't decide whether or not I like it. But I liked the subtle energy boost and the knowledge that I was getting a good dose of antioxidants, so I tried another. Then another....and now I am hooked. I LOVE this tea! It does have an earthy flavor, full and rich. No sharpness at all. Not everyone who likes tea will care for this. I've had two other tea drinkers try this and they didn't care for it at all. So you may not want to purchase it in bulk until you try it. But if you're like me, and love it as much as I do, you'll keep several boxes at home, a box at work, and several bags with you wherever you go.

I keep waiting for that caffein kick, and still waiting…. I'm surprised after reading all the reviews about how bright and energetic this morning breakfast tea will leave you. But alas, this is not so for me. And I'm particularly sensitive to caffein. So much so that I can't drink coffee.

The flavor of this tea is quite nice. It's bold and sturdy. But i was also hoping for the energetic part...

Although it may not give you the acidic bite of a strong cup of coffee , it does have a distinctive flavor all it's own and it does have that caffeine kick that kind of creeps up on you rather than hit you right away..it is very pleasing to the palate if you're a regular tea drinker. I take a few bags with me to work for a quick caffeine fix in the middle of the afternoon that way I have a fresh cup and dont have to brew an entire pot of coffee for just a cup or two. Works great for me..and obviously I like it since I purchased a whole case of it.
