Questions about Authentic Maeda-en Japanese Sencha Green Tea - 100 Foil-Wrapped Tea Bags
Q:
Folks, I bought this Green Tea before. Apparently Maeda-en has two kinds of Sencha Green Tea; one with a smoky flavor and one without. Which is this?
Answer: This is the smoky one: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004S8N7S2/ref=oh_details_o05_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 (Brown rice flavor)
Answer: Boy, I'm confused by MariaRL's and Wire Critic's answers. Yes, this is what is labeled as their "traditional" green tea without brown rice (known as genmaicha), but it does have a smoky flavor. If you compare it to the Yamamotoyama Sushi Bar Style and Kirtland Signature Ito En Matcha Blend green teas, you'll smell and taste the difference. As a green tea purist, I do not like this tea.
Answer: This is the regular green tea.
Answer: This doesn't have the smoky flavor.
Q:
What does the tea inside the bag look like...is it whole leaf, broken leaves or powder?
Answer: Hi it’s like grinded green tea leaves as regular tea bag. Not powder.
Answer: They are broken leaves, very small, may bee a little powdery from travel, but contained inside the teabag made of a paper tea bag, nothing will escape into your tea cup.
Answer: It is more like a powder. Not as fine as gunpowder tea but much finer than broken leaves.
Answer: The tea in the bag is in granulated form. It is faster brewing and has better flavor than leaves.
Answer: loose leaf as Konacha
Answer: Broken leaves
Q:
Is this edible? I usually add sencha powder to my protein shakes and blend them. Wondering if I can do it with these.
Answer: These are absolutely edible and quite tasty! But they are individually packaged tea bags so you can't use them as a powder to add to drinks.
Answer: It's package like a tea bag but it's just powder in the bag.
Q:
I'm trying to figure out how this product (upc: 885376264429) differs from upc: 885376264429. both on amazon and both have the same bag in the photos?
Answer: I think is an option from Amazon when you sell a certain type of product.. Great TEA
Answer: Try to buy the one from Japan is authentic and better
Q:
With or without matcha, why does amazon keep shipping the wrong product?
Answer: It happened to me too. Wish I knew the a answer
Q:
What is the difference between the foil wrapped tea bags and the regular ones?
Answer: I believe the difference is that individually wrapped bags stay fresh long. It is a standard tea bag inside the foil packet.
Answer: Foil keep the flavor better than papel
Answer: The tea stays fresher longer.
Answer: It keeps the scent of tea better.
Answer: Nothing . The foil wrapped seem fresher though
Answer: None what so ever.
Answer: These were not very good
Q:
is this certified ORGANIC?
Answer: It is not certified organic as it is imported from Japan.
Answer: No. Nowhere on the packaging describes this item as organic.
Q:
Is the same tea that is served in sushi restaurants?
Answer: Yes in many cases. I have been to Japan six times and this is nearly identical to the green tea served there, which is dryer and more earthy than many commercial green teas. Hope this response helps.
Answer: Honestly, I don’t know. Sorry
Q:
Does this come out like the distinctly green tea that sushi restaurants sell?
Answer: I guess it depends on which sushi restaurant you're comparing it to and what kind of green tea you like. This is what is labeled as their "traditional" green tea, but it has a smoky flavor that I dislike in a Japanese green tea. If you compare it to the Yamamotoyama Sushi Bar Style and Kirtland Signature Ito En Matcha Blend green teas, you'll smell and taste the difference.
Answer: Yes! That was exactly why I bought it. Most green teas don't taste anything like what I get at Japanese restaurants. This was an excellent find.
Answer: Yes, I asked the waiter at my favorite sushi restaurant and he said it was Maeden Green tea. It taste just the same.
Answer: If you think you know green tea, think again. Go to this company's site, harney-teas/green-tea/japanese.html, and read about 17 varieties.
Answer: Yes...it is strong (in good way) and distinct. IMO, it is as good as it gets...coming from a bag.
Q:
The ingredients state that it's just green tea. does anyone know if there is rice or anything else added to this tea? i don't want to break my fast.
Answer: Says on the package, Ingredients: 100% natural green tea.
Answer: The bags only contain green tea.
Q:
I just received this and it says green tea with matcha on the bag and the tea bags all say sencha, green tea with matcha. Did it change?
Answer:
Answer:
Answer: I'm having the same issue. I first ordered it at the end of 2018, and received the "sencha green tea" that is advertised, but since then I have been trying to get a second bag, but of the last 4 times I ordered it (trying to get the correct one) they sent "green tea with matcha" instead. The green tea with matcha definitely tastes different from the sencha green tea, but I'm also wondering if they just changed it and didn't update the product images or description. Very frustrating. I've ordered it from multiple sellers and they all shipped the one with matcha instead.
Answer: Last time we wanted just Sen- Cha and thats what’s what we received
Answer: Hmmm I’m not sure; it’s been quite a while since I ordered for my Mom. But it seems we had received what we’d ordered...
Q:
How much caffeine does each tea bag contain?
Answer: I do not know this one
Q:
I have bought this twice and both times i was sent green tea with matcha. has this issue been corrected ?
Answer:
Answer:
Answer: Not sure. I bought it about four times in the past and it said green tea and tasted like green tea.
Answer: I bought Green Tea with Sencha, not Matcha, Matcha is the ta used in tea ceremony, it is a powered green tea.
Answer: That’s the same as I riecived
Answer: I do not know. It happened to me once too.
Q:
Is the sencha green tea with matcha have caffeine ?
Answer: The product wrapping does not say. Usually all green tea has some but it is lower than most caffeinated teas. That's the best I can offer and I am just supposing due to lack of manufacturer's notes.
Answer: Yes. Except for herbal teas (which despite the name are made from plants other than the tea plant), or decaffeinated tea, all tea has caffeine. The amount of caffeine depends on the type of plant, how it is grown, and how it is brewed. The amount of caffeine in tea is much less than in coffee.
Answer: As far as I know, all green Teas have caffeine.
Answer: Yes. There are decaffeinated versions of Sencha, but I haven't found them to have the same strength and flavor.
Answer: Not sure. I believe it does.
Answer: Yes.
Answer: Yes

Q:

Q:
one commenter said there is food coloring in this. Is that true?
Answer: It says its all natural, and since its authentic, i dont think they would put food coloring in it.
Answer: I didnt see anything about food coloring on the packaging. Can you food color tea leafs?
Answer: No. I don't use this product due to the smoky flavor. Try Stash brand tea much better.
Q:
Is this the tea that Benihana use at the restaurant
Answer: Hi, I don't know if Benihana uses this tea. It is used at Japonaise, a high-end Japanese restaurant at the Mirage hotel in Las Vegas.

Answer: The package states: Product of Japan
Answer: It doesn't say. It says imported by: G.T. Japan, Inc. Product of Japan

Product reviews of Authentic Maeda-en Japanese Sencha Green Tea - 100 Foil-Wrapped Tea Bags
Megan : Pretty Good Tea
I am rather new to green tea. The green tea you get from the grocery store here in the U.S. is in my opinion, not very good. Previously, my only experience with green tea I actually liked was from Benihana. And I got these because I read somewhere that this exact brand/variety is what Benihana uses. I am doubtful about that, personally, as I don't think they taste the same at all - but I do like this tea a lot. I think I've reordered it 2-3 times so far. My one complaint is that you will get a bit of powdered tea (green color of course) on your fingers when you touch the teabag. I always have to wipe my hands with a napkin both after I put the teabag in the cup and again when I take it out. Maybe this is the consequence of fresher tea?
PG : Never going back. This tea is amazing!
I had an long-time favorite green tea (by Tazo) that I had been enjoying for years. Rarely was I spotted without a travel mug full of my favorite, freshly brewed. On just my second cup of this tea, I moved every remaining box of my old favorite from my desk drawer to the company breakroom, and it disappeared. The wonderful, rich and nutty flavor of this green tea made me instantly realize, with some regret, what a low-quality green tea I had been drinking all these years. Never going back. This tea is amazing!
cameron : It's okay, but not exactly what's in the picture
This is okay tea, it is sencha, it's packaged well, nice individual foil wrapped teabags as advertised. But when I saw the package I thought I was mistaken when ordering it, because this isn't just sencha green tea, this has matcha added to it. That doesn't make it bad, all it is is a kind of powdered green tea that makes the tea hazy in appearance and a bit stronger. But that does mean it isn't the flavor advertised above (compare with my picture.)
I don't think I'll be ordering this brand again
djw : Great taste
Really like the distinct green tea flavor. Tea bags are well sealed and fresh upon opening.
Amazon Customer : Good Flavor
This tea is quite tasty. Good aroma and deep flavor.
Happy : Can't beat the price!
This is a review from someone who grew up In Japan drinking green tea.
Sencha is a casual/reasonable form of green tea with full of nutrients.
This product is a sencha green tea with matcha. So the distinctive taste/aroma is of matcha. As sencha, quality is just ok and lacks the bitterness/aroma that sencha has to offer, but it is as reasonable as authentic japanese green tea can go in the US!
Maeda-en is a household name tea maker in Japan.
Patricia Brown : My love affair with sencha green
I've always been a black tea kind of person, as I don't really like the mild taste of green tea. But after hearing about Sencha Green for the first time from an episode of Person of Interest, I was curious enough to try it out. And wow, what a world of difference it is from barrage of boredom that is normal green tea. This is not my first Sencha green, but it is certainly worth every penny. I will probably have to refill soon.
Michelle Kim : Authentic Japanese Green Tea
For those of you with high standard for green tea, this green tea is so fulfilling. As someone who lived in Japan for 7 years and now living in the US, this tea gives me the calm and takes me back to the familiarity with the green tea..the right one.
Masa : Maeda-en tea bags are superior
Flavor: Refreshing and clean. This sencha has the right taste without being overly bitter. These bags contain some matcha powder so the tea diffuses into hot water quickly and leave a smooth flavor. Definitely better than grocery store brands (Lipton, Bigelow) as well if you desire an authentic Japanese green tea. Even the Kirkland brand (made by Ito-en) tastes more like grass-water in comparison.
Quality: I have purchased this 3+ times now and the freshness and taste is very consistent.
Value: The price is excellent considered the quality of this product and it ships with Prime.
Why green tea?
If you are weighing whether to buy green tea or not, here are some key benefits:
- High in nutrients and antioxidants like TGCG
- Reduces blood sugar and inflammation
- Improves heart and brain health
- Caffeine ;)
Green : Great tea
I'm half Japanese and have tried a lot of green tea. This is one of my favorites (I have 2). Great taste, great price. Fresh. I really enjoy this tea.
Egregore : Best bagged green tea, and cheap!
I drink a lot of tea. Like 64+ ounces per day. And I can say with confidence, that this is simply the best bagged sencha I have found. Nice green color. Nice grassy aroma. Does not have much of the sweetness that is found in some higher grades of sencha (but hey, it's tea in a bag). And, its cheap, too! There is no doubt that taking the time to prepare a nice pot of loose leaf sencha can yield a far superior cup of tea, but If you drink a lot of green tea on the go, then this is a great deal.
Remember! Do not use water that is hotter than 180° F (~80°C), and do not steep for longer than 2 minutes. I think that most of the reviewers that dislike this tea (or green tea haters in general) may have had negative experiences due to these factors. And do not squeeze your tea bag. It releases extra tannins, and makes your tea bitter. Ok, that is all. Buy this tea.
Warren W. Wiley : I don't think you even have to lift your little finger!
I'm just a fat old American guy, never been to Japan or the Orient for that matter, but a habitue of Japanese restaurants. My usual tea has been Earl Grey Breakfast so I have a little familiarity with tea. If you have not had this kind of tea it will be perhaps startling to you-it has a somewhat pungent and earthy flavor, especially if you OVER steep it. In fact, if you let it steep too long it will develop a nasty flavor. But brew it properly and if is a different experience and a new taste. And of course you get all the natural healthy benefits. If you have enjoyed the tea at a SERIOUS Japanese restaurant you might recal this type tea.
You can't beat the price (I ordered the 100 bag count) and if you play around with your water temperature and steeping time you will come to enjoy it. If not, I guess it would be a nice addition to your flower garden or compost barrel.
tacomalo : amazing flavor! Completely different to the standard green tea ...
Not really a fan of green tea. My mom asked me to order a "Japanese green tea", so I looked some up, read some reviews and ordered this brand.
I have to say...amazing flavor! Completely different to the standard green tea you see in the grocery store. Almost sweet. Would strongly recommend giving it a try. Very happy I ordered and will order again.
Jpeg : Don't think it's the original one
Thought it was just me, until I saw another review. The bags desintegrate when you drain the water. There's no taste to this tea. I'm familiar with this as I drink it twice a day. I'm afraid this might be a fake, and will not drink it, who knows what's in it.
H Livingston : Great value
This is the third time i’ve Ordered this tea. I drink it but I also use it to sooth my tired eyes. Seriously! Love it.
Betty : Best Green Tea
We were at our favorite Japanese restaurant one night, and we were both having the hot green tea. It tasted so much better than anything I've been able to find in a grocery store, that I finally asked the server if she could give me the brand name. She did and this is it. I can't say enough how delicious it is. The key to a perfect cup is not over steeping and while I love my coffee, this has become by favorite after dinner drink. Don't be turned off by the price....this is a lot of green tea and because the bags are individually wrapped, it will stay fresh tasting.

S. Rowland : It's not even terribly expensive for the quality
I'm a big green tea drinker, and I've spent the past few years trying out various green teas, whatever is on sale, organic, flavored, etc. I bought this tea for home, and after my first cup I realized this will be the green tea I'm going to drink for the next 10 years. It's full of flavor, even without adding honey or other sweeteners. It's not even terribly expensive for the quality, coming out to 20 cents per tea bag. I rarely give any product 5 stars (there's always room for improvement), but this one is perfect as is.
John : oh Japan
Love this tea. Reminds me of when I'm in Japan. Great bold flavor just like they serve in restaurants there.
Jpeg : Don't think it's the original one

Daniel Turcich : Matcha?
I wanted to believe all the 5 star reviews but this tea is not comparable to the actual good green teas with equally high reviews on Amazon. It does, as multiple 1 star reviews state, have a somewhat 'smokey' green tea flavor. However, it's not terrible. Despite the package claiming "Sencha with Matcha," I don't see how any Matcha is involved in this tea at all and it has a rather brown color overall. If you are looking for alternatives from Amazon with high ratings that I prefer, here is my list:
Yamamotoyama Sushi Bar Style Green Tea: 5 stars (my personal favorite)
Yamamotoyama Sencha: 4.5 stars (was sent to me by mistake but pleasantly surprising)
Yamamotoyama (regular) Green Tea: 4.5 stars (different from their Sencha but in a good way)
Kirkland Ito En Matcha Blend Japanese Green Tea: 4 stars (a little light on flavor)
All of the above teas have a nice green color and flavor.
Pen Name : Great tea
Great product “tea”
Enjoy each cup
David Grace : A very good Sencha
My previous favorite Sencha was discontinued and after a few days of mourning I went searching Amazon and found this hidden treasure.
I like Green tea and Sencha in particular because of its smoother taste, and this tea is a good example of that. If you leave it in the cup for longer it gets stronger but without the bitterness that you would from get from a black tea steeped for the same time.
There are plenty of first class loose leaf Sencha teas but if you want a very good everyday green tea that is convenient to make and at a reasonable price - go on give these a brew.
HJF : Twice ordered Sencha Green Tea as pictured, but received Sencha Green Tea w/MATCHA! Disappointed.
I gave this 1 star because twice I ordered and received Sencha green tea with Matcha! Not what was pictured, described or what I ordered. Disappointed. Sencha Green tea is what I like, I Don’t like Green tea with Matcha, Match has a distinct flavor.

Myost Pitts : great purchase
100 individually foiled teabags that taste great! Excellent mossy green tea flavor - I will order again. Nice transaction with Amazon.
John : oh Japan
Love this tea. Reminds me of when I'm in Japan. Great bold flavor just like they serve in restaurants there.
Amazon Customer : IT IS GOOD FOR YOUR HEALTH
Years ago I was in a Japanese market and an older Japanese lady told me that if I drank this tea EVERY DAYI I would have a good chance of never having CANCER SO I HAVE BEEN DRINKING IT EVER SENSE!!!!!!!!!!!!
Shantididi : Too bad the brand has made changes where the product taste ...
I purchased this exact item before from an asian grocery store and the 'green' note of the tea was much more robust than this purchase. Disappointing. A gr8 sencha in a bag is so convenient for me, but only if flavor is not compromised. Too bad the brand has made changes where the product taste is damped down.
muy. bueno : Clean THC
I LOVE this Tea. Had helped me stopped smoking marijuana and had flushed THC out of my body Took it for a month best tea is soo good the best. Taste so good it helped me control the cravings of smoking or over eating. Delivery was super fast thank you

Dude : Not 100% sen-cha tea
Picture shows 100% sen-cha tea. I unexpectedly received sen-cha with matcha. It is non-returnable. I first purchased a smaller package of Maeda-en sen-cha tea (without matcha), which I enjoyed so much that I went for this bulk package. Tasting them together they are not the same, and the sen-cha with matcha is definitely not as good. It has a decent flavor, but now I have 100 bags of tea that I didn't really want. I was fooled by the picture, and now I am a dissatisfied customer.
A. Clarens : This is the best bagged green tea you're going to find
This is an exceptional product and this company ships super super fast. I don't know how they do it!!!! the best bagged green tea you're going to find. It's even better than some of the high priced loose green tea.
JCG : Green tea snob loves this tea.
I lived in Nagasaki prefecture on Kyushu Island, Japan, for almost four years. There, I experienced green tea. Upon moving back to the United States I was disenchanted with the green teas offered by big box stores. I stopped drinking green tea for years. Dark were those years and full of woe…
My thirst for green tea was later re-ignited at a very authentic Sushi & Sashimi bar in a neighboring city. I began searching high and low for the perfect daily green tea, wasting a lot of time and money. I only recently found this excellent daily drinker, Maeda-en Sen Cha. The quality verses price is OUTSTANDING. To say this green tea is a value is a huge understatement. I share this tea frequently and seldom fail to get rave reviews.
The flavor is very delicate as long as you do not steep too long. I usually get two cups of tea from each bag; the first cup I steep for 1-3 minutes the second cup 3-5 minutes…
EDIT: It is also great for a variety of Kombucha called Jun that uses green tea and honey!
I hope this helps you make an informed decision.

Anabolism : Average quality sencha, not tasty
I am a Japanese green tea aficionado; I drink high-quality loose-leaf sencha and other Japanese teas at home, but want bags for convenience when traveling. I have previously tried DoMatcha Tencha bags, and Den's Tea pyramid green tea bags, both delicious and easy to brew with variable water quality and temperature as encountered in hotels. I realized I was out just before leaving on a trip, so turned to Amazon and tried the Maeda-en. Unfortunately, this tea is nowhere close to the quality and taste of the DoMatcha or Den's Tea.
Suleima Ureno : Matcha tea
If you like the taste of Matcha then you will love this tea... i love it! I drink my coffee and after a cup of tea and i have energy all day long.
Amazon Customer : Best green tea yet
I’ve been drinking green tea products for years but tea brand has a great taste .
Freshness is important to me, so I was impressed to see that each tea bag is individually wrapped in a vacuum sealed package. Great product
Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious : Good green tea.
I love tea. I drink it nonstop after I stop drinking coffee in the AM. I have tried a lot of different green teas both authentic and commercial (I've tried them all from cheap to expensive brands). I tend to find the 'authentic' green teas are less concentrated and have a more distinct, even bitter flavor. I am not that picky when it comes to green tea and just like to try different brands.
I have no idea if this is the best green tea out there, but I do like the flavor, smell, and overall taste. It has Matcha as well. I do find that each packet is different since some produce a deep color or sometimes it appears more clear. Obviously, the water you use can affect the quality of the tea and I use filtered water to ensure it doesn't affect the flavor of the tea. Supposedly, Sencha is one of the better types of green teas and I like knowing I'm drinking a higher quality, more nutrient tea if I can. But I really drink tea for the flavor and to get my liquids in.
After four months, I still have plenty left. I tend to only use 1 or two depending on much I can get out of each packet. If I get packet that offers a more concentrated seep, I can get 2-4 refills and on a weaker seep, 1-2. More often than not, I get a fairly good concentrated seep so only use one a day, which is cost effect. I like that this tea does not get bitter as it steeps as I keep my tea bag in my mug at all times and I usually have it on a mug warmer.
Because of the Matcha included in the tea bag, there is a lot of powder that is in the package and also just falls out of the packet and into the bottom of your cup. The Matcha adds another layer of flavor but it's not strong or overpowering. And, very minor but slightly irritating: the tea tag falls off all the time.
I would definitely consider buying again, and it's nice to buy in bulk as it lasts for a long time. You get a lot for your money since I'm able to get far more refills than expected. However, I'm not blown away by this tea or this brand but we'll see how I feel once I got through the whole package!
A. Bills : Great Green Tea
This has a great taste that is not at all bitter. I leave the tea bag in for ~1-2 minutes and usually squeeze it before removing. I do use a large mug as a tea cup and find that this is delicious even when it gets cold. It's my favorite so far.
John : oh Japan
Love this tea. Reminds me of when I'm in Japan. Great bold flavor just like they serve in restaurants there.
Ms. Essjay : Great authentic green tea
Love this tea. Great for mood elevation and feeling energized. I drink it every day.
Jhune : Maybe I got a stale, old stock?
A bit disappointed.. it doesn’t taste as authentic as I assumed it would. I need two bags for my 4oz cup. I’ll return to my Costco Green tea bags— with one tea bag, I can reuse twice.
L. Helms : This tea is good, if you can get them to actually send you the one pictured
The first time I ordered this Maeda-en Sencha Green Tea it was through the seller PowerforApple, and I received the product pictured. The tea is very good, though I was thrown off at first because it has a nutty taste and brownish green color I wasn't expecting. My husband described it as tasting like a green tea with toasted rice, though no rice was seen in the tea bags. It has a very nice flavor though as long as you know what to expect. Since then I have tried to reorder this tea 4 times and have received Maeda-en Green Tea with Matcha each of those 4 times, which is not the same tea and has a very different flavor. The sellers that have sent me the green tea with matcha instead of the sencha green tea are TA National Trading, A Rom Fresh, and JDJ Trading Co., and PowerforApple (who originally sent the correct sencha tea) so beware that you may not receive the sencha green tea advertised.
you can compare the product price from Costco, wayfair, bestbuy, lowes, target, homedepot, Walmart, ebay, amazon to find the best price for you
