product description
Flavor Name:Pure Loose Leaf | Size:5 Pound (Pack of 1)
ECOTEAS Yerba Mate Loose Leaf
Yerba mate dried has a characteristic smoky taste that many people still associate with the herb. At ECOTEAS, we coined the term “UNSMOKED” to describe our own organic family farm’s exclusive smoke-free 2-stage yerba mate tea drying process. Working together with an Argentine university and a fair trade development fund, we created a unique drying system on our farmer’s land that uses natural gas instead of firewood. The system is far more efficient and clean than any other technology that is currently available. We flash heat the herb with hot air. Then we slow-dry it with warm air. Both stages are 100% smoke-free.
YERBA MATE BENEFITS:

Minimize packaging through cutting-edge compostable materials and simplicity of design to deliver exceptional teas with minimal impact on the earth and cost-conscious budgets. OUR STORY ECOTEAS was born of the belief that conscious business has a role to play in restoring balance to the earth and our bodies. Lifelong friends Stefan Schachter, Brendan Girard, and Joseph Chermesino founded ECOTEAS in Ashland, Oregon in the year 2000. In those early years, we packaged our products by hand and served tea at local farmers markets to get the word out. After two decades of service, ECOTEAS remains privately owned and operated by its original founders.

Questions about ECOTEAS Unsmoked Yerba Mate Tea - Pure Loose Leaf Tea - 5Lb - Detox Tea - Organic Tea - Yerba Mate Loose Leaf - Hi Caf Tea - Ecoteas Yerba Mate
Q:
Is there caffeine in this?
Answer: Mate is a caffeinated tea.
Answer: Yes it is. When I want decaffeinated mate, I just steep it in hot water for thirty seconds, through out the first batch, and brew a cup with the now mostly caffeine free leaves. This works with tea, too.
Answer: Yes, yerba mate is naturally caffeinated.
Answer: Yes .. That is why the gauchos in Argentina drink it all day :-)
Answer: Yes. 85mg per 8 fluid ounces
Q:
Hi I was wondering if this bag was resealable? I ask because I typically buy the 3 1 lb bags from amazon and throw the ones i'm not using in the freezer for storage. i'm not sure how i'd go about storing this much mate.
Answer: I would not say the bag is reusable. Why not put it in big baggies and freeze it? Most people in Latin America keep mate in glass airtight jars. Or you can just take what you need out of the bag and keep the whole bag in the freezer; I guess that would work. It is a lot of mate. I am not sure it really goes bad too fast.
Answer: No, the bag is not resealable... I portioned mine out between storage bags; I suppose the best way to do it would be to vacuum seal the extra, if you have that capability.
Answer: It wasn't and so I put it in a large canister. You could go a couple of gallon zip lock bags in the freezer. It seemed to grow in volume when I opened it. It was exceptional tea with no stem pieces. I will definitely buy it again.
Answer: No, I don't think so. It was sewn shut with string, upon arrival. I cut the string and pulled it, like pet food bags. I just folded the top down.
Q:
I'm just curious why you are charging so much? This is twice the price for a 5lb bag. You can get this straight from Eco teas for under $50.
Q:
What country(ies) is this sourced from?
Answer: En Argentina mate es una bebida típica. Mate is a traditional drink in Argentina, and this mate is sourced from there.
Q:
How does the taste compare to taragui loose leaf yerba matè?
Q:
Can this be brewed using a Keurig k cup?
Answer: I use a large coffee press to brew the tea.
Q:
Is this roasted or green dried mate'?
Answer: Green dried...its great!
Answer: it is a green product like green tea. The method of processing was aired in a machine
Answer: Green dried
Q:
Why has the price doubled in the last 2 days?
Product reviews of ECOTEAS Unsmoked Yerba Mate Tea - Pure Loose Leaf Tea - 5Lb - Detox Tea - Organic Tea - Yerba Mate Loose Leaf - Hi Caf Tea - Ecoteas Yerba Mate
Pablo : Good tea , bad packaging
this is a very good tea. Although the product arrived with a couple of holes. the box ended up with bunch of loose tea all over.
The tea ended up a little humid. Defiantly not dry like it suppose to be.
Benjamin Africa III : Winner in taste and price
I have been a devout Yerba Mate drinker for over 20 years. At first it was Guayaki, the only brand available in this part of the country. But those little bags quickly lost their appeal and I found Nativa at a little store in Truckee California. It was reasonably priced and I liked the taste. The 35 mile drive was a bit inconvenient but we worked it in for visits with the daughter. Then I read an article about Mate causing various sicknesses in a government publication. So I quit for almost a year and tried to drink coffee again. Not the same, couldn't get back into the nasty ass taste. So I thought about that publication and began to wonder if maybe just maybe their test had been run on "smoked" mate. Since smoke is the cause of many ailments, what if mate was smoked with things down there that would add to any harmful elements. So I looked for non-smoked mate. First I called Nativa and someone told me that all mate was smoked. I knew that to be wrong since I just happened to have some bags of Eco Teas Mate, that were NOT SMOKED. But their product in the small bags ran about $15 with tax. Whew killer since I could got thru a bag in about two weeks if I really hit it. Then I found this five pound bag and the price was a shocker. This is a fine tasting mate, no bitter after taste, none of that smoke taste or smoke after taste. I guess it would be difficult to share a traditional mate gourd with others since they would be drinking my mate up too fast. One can find this in most stores and sample a small purchase, but if you are a serious drinker this company and product is a winner.
Jenn : GREAT DEAL
I'm so addicted to this stuff...but in a good way. It's helped me get off my coffee crutch, not to mention saving me tons of money!! My skin is clearer and less dehydrated as well. Try soaking the tea overnight prior to heating and drinking. Cheers!

K : Great product
I usually buy this exact same product in a 1# bag from our local natural foods store, and found it on Amazon in bulk, saving about 50%. The 5# bag is a MUCH better product than the 1#- it's all leaf, no stems, processed to a very fine cut. I don't know why it isn't the exact same whether you buy 1# or 5#, but it isn't. I highly recommend buying it in bulk- you'll save a lot of money, and it's a much better product.
Patrick M. : Quality unsmoked Yerba Mate for a good price
I read about the benefits of drinking Yerba Mate, so I started researching which brand I wanted to buy. I certainly wanted organic Yerba Mate and unsmoked Yerba Mate. I read that the smoked variety may actually cause some health problems. I found this Ecoteas Yerba Mate and it is inexpensive and unsmoked. I did a little research on the company and it seems to be pretty good. I purchased the product and it has a nice taste. I drink it sweetened with some coconut sugar and it tastes very nice. Sometimes I just drink it plain and it is still nice. I also like that I can steep this while cold and it still infuses nicely into the cold water.
The only issue that I would have with Yerba Mate in general is the caffeine content. The caffeine in this product is natural. However, I have felt jittery several times after drinking it. That is certainly something for me to keep an eye on. There is quite a bit of caffeine in Yerba Mate which may be concerning for some people.
This is a good and inexpensive unsmoked Yerba Mate. I highly recommend it but be careful with the caffeine content.
Zepherine : Super Stuff
This seems to be the most economical way to purchase loose-leaf yerba mate, outside of a certain Philadelphia neighborhood grocery where it's sold for next to nothing. This brand is good. The taste is very smooth--absolutely no bitterness, and I make a large pot & drink from it all day. That the tea is certified organic is a big plus, since I ingest so much of it.

Becky Pheysey : Five Stars
I love this Mate! Thanks for a great product.
Stewart : High quality!
I have to admit, I wasn't expecting this much mate when I ordered it! This is like a charcoal bag full of mate! Nonetheless, this is really high quality mate. It has very few sticks/ twigs. The leaves are ground up quite small; if you use a gourd+straw or a tea infuser, you need pretty small mesh holes. But otherwise, I love this mate! I brew up about 1-2 tablespoons of the dry mate in a small amount of hot water then I pour it over ice and add a small amount of whatever juice I have in the fridge. It's really good with pomegranate or tangerine juice.
Deborah J. Ballard : tea
I have drank this for years it give me the lift I need in the morning with out the nerviness coffee does
Michael Knickerbocker : Simply love this tea
Simply love this tea. Coffee with lots of added spices used to be my go to for years. Now I drink Yerba Mate. I brew in hot water for 10 minutes, I like it strong, then strain. This will be my second 5 lb purchase after trying the 1 lb.
Nina B. : Fresh and flavorful
I'm a tea fanatic. This is the best yerba mate I've had. Perfect flavor. Plus, the 5 lb bag is a really good deal and using a travel press keeps me from spending on crappy coffeehouse drinks.
Jenn : GREAT DEAL

Awesome product at a great price.
Oregon : Best deal
One of my favorite brands of mate and the price is amazing - the best deal I have ever found. PLUS, I can get it on subscribe and save for an even greater discount.
Phillip jean : Love it!
I drink it as my daily coffee. I order it regularly and it keeps me going. It's healthy and makes me more mentally alert. Since it's 100% herbal, and it's proven to help blood flow, I trust it 100%.

Angela : Not good Yerba for mate
My family is from Argentina and I have drank mate most of my life. I really did not like this mate. It tasted and smelled like iron or something. I couldn’t even drink it. Unfortunately I can’t return it therefore I’ll just have to throw it away. I wish this company had better Yerba and a better return policy.
courtwriter : For medicinal purposes (staying sharp)
Seems to give me better awareness without any nervous feeling. I have a high-intensity job where I have to think. Helps a ton, especially if I'm tired.
RAQUEL MAARTEL : awesome
Awesome flavor. Fresh, moist & well priced. I prefer it to the more expensive brand I use to buy Guayaki.
L. DeVoe : Yummy and good quality
My hubby loves this tea. I bought him Yerba Mate and he kept running out. So I went big. Very good quality, and a great price.
Chaffee : Excellent substitute for coffee
Wow...allot of tea with 5 lbs... like a year supply... wake up and drink this...tastes very good... I also drink this with distilled water... to taste the full affects of it...without the after taste of fluoride and other toxic tap water ingredients.... they sell water distillers on amazon...highly recommend getting one...

Trajan : Bad at first... But after six months...
There are a few reviews about this particular Yerba Mate tasting like seaweed. I have tried many brands of Yerba Mate and I have to say when I brewed my first cup of EcoTeas Yerba Mate I was very disappointed. It really did taste like seaweed. It did not taste like a good the Yerba Mate I have tried with other brands. However... I did let it sit in my cupboard for 6 months and totally forgot about it. Then I decided I would give it another try before throwing it out. the difference that 6 months of "aging" made was remarkable. The tea now tastes like the best of the best yerba mate I have tried. I am sure an expert on Yerba Mate could explain what aging does to this tea and I am no expert so I will not attempt it. I just know it made a huge difference in taste for the better. If you have bought this tea and had the same experience, I would suggest letting it sit for 6 months. I would like to give this tea 5 stars because it really is that good after 6 months of aging, but I am giving it 4 stars since that is a long time to wait before being able to enjoy the tea.
Telly : Awesome
I love this stuff. It's delicious and I drink it as a latte instead of coffee. There's tons of it, It lasts me a long time and ends up costing me way less that all those little bags.

Florida Man : Seems fresher than other mates
This yerba mate seems fresher than other brands I've bought. Sometimes I sweeten it with raw honey and it taste fine but usually I add a scoop of Mystic Chai from Sam's Club. My brewing method is lazy but works for me: put 3 generous tbls mate in a one quart glass measuring cup, heat 18-20ozs water to just under boiling, add to yerba mate in the measuring cup, let set for 10-30minutes (not exactly scientific but I think it's fine), maybe stir once or twice, depending on how busy I get, strain through a small, fine-meshed stainless steel strainer into a one quart plastic Rubbermaid container with a screw on lid and drinking spout, then add the Mystic Chai, shake and drink. Totally not your normal yerba mate but it's a great combo to get my day started right.
I definitely recommend it.

kehewett : Trusted company...great quality and great price!
I've purchased from this company for years. Great prices and trust that the quality of their teas is the best available. They are a "hands on" company and truly care about their customers!
Stephan : The best yerba mate out there
The best yerba mate out there. I tried guyaki and more traditional ones but this one is amazing.
Flavor wise it's the best and it comes moist, not deep dried like the others. I just need to find a storage solution for the 5 pounds one. Any idea?
Nina B. : Fresh and flavorful

I usually buy this exact same product in a 1# bag from our local natural foods store, and found it on Amazon in bulk, saving about 50%. The 5# bag is a MUCH better product than the 1#- it's all leaf, no stems, processed to a very fine cut. I don't know why it isn't the exact same whether you buy 1# or 5#, but it isn't. jessica : Great product! A tad bitter, but still tastes great!
Holy cow that's a lot of mate! Tastes good, fresh, potent. I switched from coffee and have ha no side effects. Great with honey and milk (almond, coconut, or cow's). The 5lbs bag saves me a tone of money compared to buying it at the store!

Zachary Nichols : That's a Lotta Mate
It's good, but I wish they offered Guayusa in this size. Mate is delicious, but I have to be careful with how I brew it. Guayusa is much more forgiving and has a far smoother taste.
Jonathan : this mate is pretty good; however
Whenever I get a fresh bag, this mate is pretty good; however, around halfway through the bag it begins to lose flavor and ends up being unpleasant and dusty tasting. I have tried keeping it in a variety of different containers - some airtight, some in fridge, glass, plastic, and the original bag - all with the same result. I have reached out twice to the company, but they failed to respond on both attempts. I will be looking for different suppliers of yerba mate. So sad, I didn't used to have these quality or customer service issues with ecoteas.
L. DeVoe : Yummy and good quality
